Dear Pictas Community,
Today, we celebrate International Women's Day, a day to honor the achievements and contributions of women worldwide. As we reflect on the strides made in the arts, we recognize with great pride the incredible female artists and photographers among us.
The world of photography has been graced by the talents of many women who have pushed the boundaries of creativity and storytelling. From the pioneering work of Eve Arnold, the first woman to join the Magnum Photo Agency, to the contemporary visions of Ellen von Unwerth, women have been instrumental in shaping how we see and experience the world through images.
Our own community is a testament to the diversity and strength of female photographers and artists. Whether capturing the essence of everyday life, exploring the complexities of identity, or challenging societal norms, your work continues to inspire and provoke thought.
Below are some excellent examples of great women in the arts that I hope will interest all members of Pictas:
LensCulture reminds us of the dedication, creativity, and vision of female photographers who have made their mark in the past year.
Shotkit introduces us to famous female photographers, both past and present, who have used their art to explore and express ideas about women.
Women Photograph showcases the work of female photographers through events and exhibitions, fostering a community where women's perspectives are celebrated. The site has an extensive database of women photographers worth looking at.
Finally, peak at the traditional masterings of Esther Mahlangu.
As we celebrate today, let's continue to support and uplift each other. Let's share our stories, visions, and art. Remember that every snapshot, painting, and image is a step towards a more inclusive and equitable world.
Here's to the female artists and photographers of the Pictas community—may your lenses/brushes/hands always capture the extraordinary, and may your art continue to break barriers and illuminate truths.
Please share your work in the comments!
Warm regards,
Géran Raath - Pictas
